Neighborhoods Glendower Court
One of the “River Oaks Neighbors,” Glendower Court is a premier neighborhood nestled between Avalon Place and Montrose. Noted Houston Lumberman Samuel Fain Carter developed Glendower Court in the 1920s as one of the first subdivisions west of downtown. A streetcar connected the new community with points east via a streetcar line that ran down Fairview. Glendower court achieved immediate recognition for its superb landscaping designed by John Watson and Donald Ross, the same team of landscapers who helped design the River Oaks Country Club golf course.
Glendower Court did not fair well during the Depression years and after World War II. A resurgence came in the 1980s and 90s when the neighborhood was “rediscovered.” In 2004, residents endorsed new deed restrictions which allowed only single family structures, mandated yearly association fees, and installed an architectural review committee.
Glendower Court’s stellar location within minutes of downtown, the Galleria and the Texas Medical Center, makes it extremely desirable. Originally a neighborhood of more modest dwellings than its neighbors Avalon Place and River Oaks, most of Glendower Court today is a community of recently constructed homes valued upwards of $500,000 with the majority valued closer to $1 million or well above. Originally platted for 141 home sites, many original lots have been re-platted to allow construction of zero-lot line luxury patio homes.
