Magnolia, Texas, is situated at the junction of Farm roads 1774 and 1488, 20 miles southwest of Conroe and 45 miles northwest of Houston in southwestern Montgomery County. Magnolia township is a spare one-mile-square radius, but the Magnolia area spans roughly 12 miles in all directions. Residents enjoy proximity to George H. W. Bush International airport, Lake Conroe and the Texas Hill Country.
Magnolia began as a sawmill town in the heart of the East Texas timber belt in the 1840s. Known as Mink’s Prairie, the name was shortened to Mink by 1850. When the railroad arrived in 1903, the town was known as Magnolia, and most of the residents had ties to the Grogan-Cochran sawmill, the main industry. The old train depot, built in 1901 and the site where so many workers and cut lumber were moved, has been restored and is a designated Texas Historic Landmark.
Today, Magnolia is a thriving community whose residents often work in nearby Houston or Conroe. The variety of housing includes conventional subdivision homes in planned communities, acreage communities and traditional farms and ranches. Homes range in price from $30,000 upwards to more than $1 million. Horses are a consistent feature of life in the community, and the area abounds with equestrian enthusiasts, excellent veterinary services and supply stores.
Perhaps Magnolia’s greatest claim to fame is the annual Texas Renaissance Festival which has been held for seven weekends in October and November for almost 30 years. Other attractions include the Blaketree National and High Meadow Ranch golf clubs, both upscale daily fee facilities.
