Sandalwood

Spring-fed lakes surrounded by homes on beautiful lots with mature trees… canoes and paddle boats…a floating pier, rope swing, and an old-fashioned diving board…children’s shouts and laughter…A resort in the Texas Hill Country? No, it’s Sandalwood, one of Houston’s vintage subdivisions in the heart of Memorial, 15 minutes from the Galleria.

According to a neighborhood history, there were two lakes in the area before Sandalwood was developed on farm and orchard property in 1954. Sandalwood’s developers, Martin Nadelman and his son-in-law Howard Singer, dredged a third lake and named all three after Singer’s daughters: Patti Lynn, Robin and Lorrie. Nadelman and Singer promoted Sandalwood as “convenient country living” and provided boats for residents’ use and free transportation to city bus lines.

Sandalwood is a true neighborhood in the old-fashioned sense. Expansive, recently constructed homes mingle with lovely, updated original structures, giving Sandalwood a pleasing variety of architectural styles. The Sandalwood Civic Club meets regularly and fun activities are planned throughout the year at the lakes and the private park. Highlights are the Fourth of July, Halloween, Holiday and Easter parties. A Sandalwood Garden Club tradition is “Flamingo Fridays,” a neighborhood get-together for “grown-ups” hosted by a different resident every month. The club also sponsors a variety of programs throughout the year and a style show. Additional neighborhood amenities include a security patrol and the lay-out of Sandalwood itself: no cut-through streets.

Sandalwood’s lakes are perfect for swimming and boating and the third lake, Patti Lynn, provides a lifeguard on duty during the summer. Sandalwood’s swim team, the Sandalwood Snakes, is a neighborhood institution. Paddle boats and canoes are frequent sights on the lakes as residents fish or simply take a turn around the shore. Homeowners enjoy walking and jogging on the winding nature trails around the lakes.

Home prices in Sandalwood range between $900,000 and $3,000,000.
