Neighborhoods West Lane Place

West Lane Place

West Lane Place is a small neighborhood of about 400 homes positioned between the Galleria and Highland Village within walking distance of some of Houston’s best restaurants, the Looscan Library, banks, Central Market and Rice Epicurean supermarkets.

There are three subdivisions under the umbrella of West Lane Place Civic Association, each with its own deed restrictions and architectural enforcement committees. In addition to location, they share a commitment to maintaining the beauty and integrity of the neighborhood, particularly West Lane Place’s lush tree canopy.

According to histories compiled by several early residents, West Lane Place was founded on prairie and rice land in 1948 beyond what was then the city’s limit. When the neighborhood was enveloped by the city in 1951, Richmond Avenue did not continue west past the railroad tracks, bus service went no further west than Mirabeau B. Lamar High School, Afton Oaks was Greenacres Horse Farm, and The Galleria did not exist.

West Lane Place today bears little resemblance to that sleepy, edge-of-town subdivision of the 1950s. Most of the small one-story bungalows have been replaced by expansive, two and three-story luxury homes with lush gardens and inviting patios and balconies. Sales prices begin in the low $400,000s for original structures and range upwards of $1 million for more recent structures.
