Neighborhoods The Woodlands
Home to more than 97,000 residents, The Woodlands is the #2 best-selling master-planned community in Texas and ranks #4 in the United States. The township began 36 years ago as the vision of George P. Mitchell, independent oil and gas entrepreneur and founder of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. Mitchell saw the need for a thoughtfully planned community where families and businesses could live in harmony with nature. In 1974, The Woodlands was born and has thrived over the years to become one of America’s largest and most successful master-planned communities. The Woodlands Development Company guides the development of The Woodlands and keeps the vision intact.
Despite its sylvan setting, The Woodlands is only 27 miles from downtown Houston and 16 miles from George Bush Intercontinental Airport; accessibility to Interstate-45 and the Hardy Toll Road make for an easy commute. The choice for many commuters is The Woodlands’ excellent Park’n’Ride system, “The Woodlands Express,” with buses operating to and from three area lots to several stops in Houston’s central business district, Greenway Plaza, and the Texas Medical Center.
Nine residential villages and two districts comprise The Woodlands, and each village is like its own small town complete with shopping, community centers, schools, recreational facilities, healthcare, and places of worship. Amenities include a 200-acre lake, six championship golf courses, parks, over 100 miles of hike-and-bike trails, two family YMCA’s, and an Olympic-class athletic facility. A variety of styles are available including golf course and lakefront properties, patio homes and town houses, and homes customized specifically for active older adults. There is a village for almost every income level and lifestyle with home prices beginning in the $100,000s and ranging into the several millions for estate properties.
The Woodlands Business Complex is composed of three development zones: the Metro center (The Woodlands downtown); the Trade Center for light manufacturing; and the 1,000-acre Research Forest for academic, high-tech and non-profit research institutes and industry. Development of The Woodlands Town Center is one of the primary goals of the Company now and in the years to come. Since the genesis of Town Center more than 30 years ago, plans have evolved and been refined by some of the top urban designers and architects in the country. The vision is reaching fruition. Town Center has become a thriving downtown in the forest that is home to high profile companies and a popular destination for residents and visitors alike.
In 2011, Exxon-Mobil announced the selection of The Woodlands for its new headquarters, broke ground on their major new office facility, and began relocating their personnel to the area. More than 100 other major companies are located in The Woodlands including Chevron-Texaco, Anadarko Petroleum, Lexicon Genetics, Chicago Bridge and Iron, and Aon Corporation.
The Village of College Park offers higher education opportunities for approximately 20,000 students enrolled in Lone-Star College-Montgomery and Lone Star College-University Center. Area extensions of Houston’s finest hospitals include Memorial Hermann TheWoodlands Hospital and St. Luke’s Woodlands Community Medical Center.*
